Basildon was mentioned in the Domesday Book as ‘Belesduna’ It was created as a New Town after WW2 to accommodate the London overspill, by amalgamating four small villages - Pitsea, Laindon, Basildon and Vange. In the centre of town stands Brooke House – a residential tower block built in 1962, it is Grade II listed and the largest structure in Basildon.
